Spanish La Liga

La Liga ranks among the most esteemed professional sports leagues worldwide. Officially referred to as the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, it is commonly known as the Primera División or La Liga. As of 2023, the league adopted the name LaLiga EA Sports for sponsorship agreements.  La Liga features 20 teams competing over a span of 38 matchdays.  Moreover, it represents the premier men’s professional football division within the Spanish football league system.  La Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional governs La Liga.

Since its establishment, a total of 62 teams have participated in La Liga, with nine teams having claimed the championship title. Barcelona was the first to win La Liga, while Real Madrid holds the record for the most titles, having been crowned champions 36 times. Real Madrid is also the reigning champion winning the 2023–24 season.

La Liga background

In the 1960s and 1970s, Real Madrid was the dominant force in La Liga, achieving fourteen titles, while Atlético Madrid secured four. The 1980s and 1990s saw Real Madrid maintain its prominence.  However, the Basque clubs, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad, also enjoyed success, each winning two titles.

From the 1990s onward, Barcelona emerged as the dominant club in La Liga, amassing a total of seventeen titles. While Real Madrid remained competitive with eleven titles, the league also witnessed victories from other clubs, including Valencia and Deportivo La Coruña.

La Liga has led European football for 22 of the 60 ranked years up to 2019, surpassing all other leagues.  Furthermore, La Liga produced the continent’s highest-rated club on 22 occasions during that timeframe. Most important, this is more than double the tally of the second-placed Serie A (Italy).  Notably, Barcelona and Real Madrid are responsible for the majority of these achievements.  The top club emerging from either of these two teams in 10 of the 11 seasons between 2009 and 2019.

Clubs within La Liga have secured the highest number of UEFA Champions League titles (20), UEFA Europa League titles (14), UEFA Super Cup titles (16), and FIFA Club World Cup titles (8). Additionally, players from La Liga garnered the most Ballon d’Or awards (24).  Furthermore, La Liga players won The Best FIFA Men’s Player awards (19), and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year accolades.
